Cottage Pie

Serves 4

1/2 lb ground round steak
1/2 lb ground turkey breast
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 onion, finely chopped
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
4 small or 2 large tomatoes, peeled and sliced
5 medium potatoes, cooked and mashed
2 oz part-skim cheddar cheese, grated

Brown beef, turkey, garlic, and onion in cooking spray. Season with pepper.

Spread one-third of meat into a small casserole dish. Top with a layer of tomatoes. Repeat layers twice, ending with tomatoes. Spread mashed potatoes over the top of the casserole and sprinkle with cheese. Bake at 375° for 30 minutes, or until the potatoes are lightly browned and the cheese is melted.


  • Add herbs or other seasonings to taste to the meat.
  • Mash the potatoes with a little skim milk or low-sodium broth; season with Dijon mustard, herbs, or other seasonings to taste.
